This course provides an introduction to alternative photographic processes, and will enable you to quickly master the basics of hand-coated, non-silver emulsions and chemistry techniques, with an emphasis on developing your skills of perception and craft. 

While the course objective looks to the past, there’s also much to be learned from the present state of photography and we will discuss a wide selection of photographs from photography’s inception over 160 years ago through to its current state. 

During the course you will have the opportunity to create a series of prints from a number of materials, personal or found images and objects. 

Open to all levels, it is recommended you bring or wear suitable clothes for darkroom use. 

By the end of the course you will have: 

  • Learned more about alternative handmade photographic process. 
  • Learned to mix chemistry 
  • Experimented with at least 2 different alternative photographic printing techniques 
  • Created photographs in variety of ways using different hand applied chemical techniques and their variants, including combined printing and toning 
  • Have the opportunity to work on a dedicated project.

Week 1: Introduction 

  • Overview of processes covered 
  • Health and safety 
  • Lab set up 
  • Chemical preparation and mixing 

Week 2: Cyanotypes
Make blue prints from various materials and existing images. We will use a few different techniques and tools for applying chemistry. 

  • Different paper coating techniques 
  • Print from materials as photogram 
  • Print from Paper Negative 

Week 3: Salt Printing
This session provides another process where we will be able to examine the benefits of using or not using surface sizing. 

  • Size paper with salt 
  • Making salted paper light-sensitive 
  • Print from contact(s) of choice 

Week 4: Toning 
We will use a number of different toners to change look of prints. We will also have the opportunity to explore combining the two processes. 

  • Print from digital negative / Xerox Transparency / negatives / photograms 
  • Make and use toners
