Composition in Photography – Beyond the ‘Rule of Thirds’

Project Days are designed for those who are already familiar with some digital photography processes but who want to pursue a particular aspect or develop more specific skills in one or more areas.

This one-day introduction to composition and design in photography is aimed at beginners or those looking to improve their skills in DSLR photography who are moving beyond the auto and program modes, and want take more confident creative control over their cameras.

Composition – the way that we organise a photograph – is one of the most creative opportunities for making strong images, but it is one that many people struggle with. Throughout the history of the medium, photographers have devised many different strategies for organising their pictures, and there are many techniques to explore and play with. We will spend a couple of hours looking at significant photographs and developing a vocabulary of composition and design.

We will then spend the remainder of the day out and about, identifying compositional opportunities and putting the new ideas into practice. It will hopefully change the way that you make pictures and view the world around you. However, I will not be revealing the ‘rules’ of composition – there aren’t any!

This course is the perfect follow-on from our Digital SLR training courses and will support you in building upon your existing knowledge of DSLR camera skills and becoming a better photographer in general. It will help you to work confidently on your own creative projects and develop the artist in you.

Courses are open to all individuals aged 16 and over. We cannot accept bookings for participants under this age.
