Project Days are designed for those who are already familiar with digital photography processes but who want to pursue a particular aspect or develop more specific skills in one or more areas.

This one day introduction to street photography (for the faint hearted!) is aimed at beginners or those looking to improve their skills in DSLR photography who are moving beyond the auto and program modes, and want take more confident creative control over their cameras.

Street photography is sometimes described as one of the ‘purest’ forms of photography, and it has a significant role in the medium’s history. In recent years it seems to be enjoying a boom in popularity amongst photographers, and with that surge there is also an amount of anxiety: where are you allowed to photograph in public places? Is it permissible to photograph strangers? How do you manage to shoot without people noticing and being offended?

This style of photography is quite anarchic, yet attracts more than its fair share of manifestos and rules. We will pick our way through some of the contradictory ideas by looking in turn at the work and approach of significant street photographers, then head out into the streets to make our own attempts.

Most importantly we will also look closely at the technical camera-handling techniques that enable photographers to react quickly. In particular we will work on the technique of manually pre-setting exposure and focus before shooting. This allows the photographer to shoot very quickly, and also encourages a deeper understanding of light and camera controls.

No-one will be pressured to do anything that they’re uncomfortable with, and at the end of the day you should be in a better position to make an informed choice about the style of photography that matches your technical ability and your personality.

You will be able to take the skills and ideas on your next city break, or to rediscover your own town or city – making the everyday magical again.

This course is the perfect follow-on from our Digital SLR training courses and will support you in building upon your existing knowledge of DSLR camera skills and becoming a better photographer in general. It will help you to work confidently on your own creative projects and develop the artist in you.

Courses are open to all individuals aged 16 and over. We cannot accept bookings for participants under this age.
