Social Photograhy as Art: the Case of Russia' Alexandra Demenkova (b.1980) belongs to the new breed of documentary photographers focusing on social issues of everyday life, ranging from the homeless people to migrant workers, from psychiatric institutions to ropewalkers, circus and street artists. She was awarded Best Photo Correspondent of the Year (St.Petersburg, 2004-2006) including the Grand Prix in 2006. She is currently a resident artist at Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten, the Netherlands.
