Screen Banditas: You are a surface too

As part of the McLaren 2014 programme - celebrating the centenary of pioneering Scottish artist, filmmaker and musician, Norman McLaren - Stills are delighted to host this exciting analogue workshop in partnership with Screen Bandita.

Film lovers aged 7-11 are invited to join Screen Bandita for a playful and inventive direct-animation workshop.

Get creative making wonderful abstract animations on 16mm celluloid filmstrips! This hands-on workshop will demonstrate techniques to draw, paint, etch and collage directly onto the celluloid in order to create a mesmerising, moving image experience. We will then project the film so you can see your creations come to life on screen!

A rare chance for young participants to play with vintage film technology and to create their own stories through the combination of imagination, celluloid film and music.

Screen Bandita
Screen Bandita are the Edinburgh and Melbourne-based collective of Lydia Beilby and Leanora Olmi. They create performative, live-cinema works using archival, found 8mm and 16mm film, slides and photographic source material.
Through the exploration of the forgotten and obsolete elements of photochemical film, the analogue projection medium and visual culture, Screen Bandita make elemental links with the past, while creating new, participatory pieces very much rooted in the present. Within their work they aim to foreground the notion of archives as vibrant, living entities to be constantly reinvigorated, reinterpreted, reinvented and debated.
Screen Bandita are delighted to host an ongoing series of workshops specially formulated for primary school children. The mobile ‘Bandita Cinema’ shares with our young audience the wonder of moving image through a series of hands-on demonstrations and conversations focusing on 8mm and 16mm film, slides and photographs.
