I Against I: Part IIII presents all new works produced in 2017 and 2018 including new commissioned works for Projects 18. The work combines paintings and photographs that are concerned with the pictorial representation of space. In the artist’s own words: “This work attempts to navigate the duality of definition, ambiguity of usefulness and diluted purpose of the quiet and unassuming two-dimensional image.”

I Against I is the title of Whittle’s ongoing series of solo exhibitions, previously at The Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art, Sunderland and The Number Shop, Edinburgh. Taking the title from the seminal punk album by Bad Brains, I Against I references the efforts of both producing artworks and curating/exhibition-making.

Thomas Whittle was born in London and studied at Newcastle University. He is currently living in Edinburgh. His practice encompasses photography, painting, drawing sculpture, performance and writing, often bringing these mediums together.
