EIFF Cameo Screening Anarcadia & Capital, Ruth Maclennan

A special screening of Anarcadia and short film Capital by Ruth Maclennan at Cameo Cinema, Edinburgh.

Capital is set in Kazakhstan's new capital Astanta. A woman traveller, a stranger, addressed the founder-ruler of a city under construction, one that promises a glossy but oppressive future by erasing the past. Anarcadia is shot in the steppe of South-Eastern Kazakhstan. Into this shifting, elemental landscape, two iconic figures - an archaeologist and prospector - seek to uncover its buried meanings and future possibilities. Overlaying rival trajectories and competing incentives, Maclennan's overlapping, often contradictory stories echo the fundamental indeterminacy and unpredictability of the desert landscape itself.

Presented in collaboration with Edinburgh International Film Festival.

Tickets are available in person at Filmhouse or Festivalhouse@teviot or by calling 0131 623 8030.

Co-commissioned by Film and Video Umbrella and John Hansard Gallery, Southampton, in association with Stills, Edinburgh, Ffotogallery, Cardiff and Castefield, Manchester. Funded by Arts Council England, and with the generous support of the British Council. Additional support from the Henry Moore Foundation

Week 1
Tour of the August Sander exhibition at the Dean Gallery followed by discussion on ideas and themes in the context of the show. Participants will discuss ideas for their own images and whom they would like to bring in the following week as models. The group will also think about possible set ideas for the interior images and locations (within the vicinity of Cockburn Street) for the exterior shots. Instruction will be given on 35mm SLR cameras: shutter speed and aperture, depth of field and film speeds, and on using light meters.

Week 2
At Stills to finalise ideas and to photograph the portraits. Each participant will shoot an interior using studio lighting, and an exterior image. They will then be told about film development to better understand the process.

Week 3
Contact printing and printing: the group will be instructed in general darkroom procedures and learn contact printing. After studying their own contact sheet, participants will choose a selection of images to print from the negatives.

Week 4
Darkroom printing: this last session will allow participants to continue printing and will also explore some basic printing techniques to get the most from their negatives.

Call for submissions

Stills is working in collaboration with Fondazione Fotografia in Modena, Italy in June 2011 on group exhibition International Departure: Gate 11. The exhibition will present work by recent graduate artists working in photography or film from a number of different countries. This is a platform for young artists to exhibit in an institutional space, to stimulate international debate around photography and visual languages.

Following the success of last year's International Departure Gate 10, Stills will represent one artist and is seeking submissions from recent graduate artists, educated in Scotland, working in photography or film.

Submissions: Please send the following in pdf format where applicable.

Six images of your recent works
Your CV (max 2 pages).
