Week 1
Tour of the August Sander exhibition at the Dean Gallery followed by discussion on ideas and themes in the context of the show. Participants will discuss ideas for their own images and whom they would like to bring in the following week as models. The group will also think about possible set ideas for the interior images and locations (within the vicinity of Cockburn Street) for the exterior shots. Instruction will be given on 35mm SLR cameras: shutter speed and aperture, depth of field and film speeds, and on using light meters.

Week 2
At Stills to finalise ideas and to photograph the portraits. Each participant will shoot an interior using studio lighting, and an exterior image. They will then be told about film development to better understand the process.

Week 3
Contact printing and printing: the group will be instructed in general darkroom procedures and learn contact printing. After studying their own contact sheet, participants will choose a selection of images to print from the negatives.

Week 4
Darkroom printing: this last session will allow participants to continue printing and will also explore some basic printing techniques to get the most from their negatives.

Call for submissions

Stills is working in collaboration with Fondazione Fotografia in Modena, Italy in June 2011 on group exhibition International Departure: Gate 11. The exhibition will present work by recent graduate artists working in photography or film from a number of different countries. This is a platform for young artists to exhibit in an institutional space, to stimulate international debate around photography and visual languages.

Following the success of last year's International Departure Gate 10, Stills will represent one artist and is seeking submissions from recent graduate artists, educated in Scotland, working in photography or film.

Submissions: Please send the following in pdf format where applicable.
Description of your practice to date (200 words),
Six images of your recent works
Your CV (max 2 pages).

Deadline Monday 28 February 2011 5pm

Stills was delighted to be part of ArtLate 13, a new initiative from Edinburgh Art Festival aiming to get more young people into art galleries.

The event was a huge success and was held across three venues - Stills, The Collective Gallery and the Henderson Gallery. The organisers, aged 17 -18, came up with the theme 'this is me' and arranged a great night of events, performances and the opportunity to create your own art.

Here in Stills there was a chance to make your own postcard revealing something about yourself - something from your past - secrets, achievements or memories. The postcards were (anonymously) displayed in the gallery for the evening providing entertainment for the passing crowds.

Comedian Phil Nicol provided more great entertainment for the evening, running up to Stills after his show at The Stand comedy club to entertain the masses and humiliate the kids by dragging unsuspecting adults onto the floor for a rendition of 'The Only Gay Eskimo in the Tribe'.

Over the road at the Collective Gallery activities concentrated on the present and the Henderson Gallery explored the future.

Congratulations to the organisers - a lot of fun had by all!

On Thursday evening 15 July we opened our doors to the Who's Who of Social Media and Digital Technology in Edinburgh, hosting a fantastic evening event for the members of the Edinburgh Coffee Morning suitably named Edinburgh Coffee Morning Beer Evening or rather EdCMBEIn attendance were more than 100 folk drinking, eating, networking and tweeting! What a night! A huge success!

It was our pleasure to host such a fantastic event and we want to express our warmest gratitude to everyone involved, namely the organisers Carrie, Nadine, Kay, and Danielle, the EdCMBE sponsors, Stewart Brewing and Illegal Jacks, supporters Vino Wines and Inigo Media and generous cash donations coming from Attacat and Eden Scott all contributing to a wonderful night of which we could not of done without.

With swarm of social media taking course and with so many offers of support and donations coming in we even decided to hold a raffle. We raised over £600 pounds for The Ambeciles / The Edinburgh Sick Kids Friends Foundation. A massive thank you to all who gave so generously and we wish the men in good stead as they take off for Mongolia in a second hand 1998  S-reg ambulance bought on E-bay. Good luck boys!

The event didn't stop there as the tweeting continued a challenge to the many ladies involved lead to a Bake-off judged by Alison (enjoyed by all) awarding first prize to @LittleDishy - A gorgeous tower bottle of liqueur donated by Demijohn.

What else is to be said other than the beer was delicous and the chili was a hot hit and the buzz of excitement leading up to it never fell short! Will we do it again? I certainly think so!

"The buzz of folk from Scotland’s Social Media and Digital scene enjoying themselves was fantastic and it was great to see a number of people who hadn’t seen each other for a very long time reconnecting. I think Stills as a venue really came into it’s own on Thursday night and from the enquiries since, I don’t think it’ll be the last!" Blog quote by Nadine Peirce

A few more words written about the event by Nadine and Laura can be found on their blogs and a host of great photos on Stills' Flickr. And why not follow the hashtag #EdCMBE or #EdCM to link up with the group and keep up with all the social media buzz in and around Edinburgh.

Well done everyone!

Carrie
