ARTISTS ROOMS: Diane Arbus Workshop with Kirkcaldy Galleries
This Spring Stills has collaborated with ARTISTS ROOMS: Diane Arbus exhibition at Kirkcaldy galleries to deliver a series of workshops and lectures based on the portraiture of the artist.
The controversial imagery made by Diane Arbus lay grounds for a duo of lectures delivered in March by Caroline Douglas and David Grinly, titled For Arbus: Unconditional but Critical and Let me assure you, you have always disgusted me respectively.
Inspired by the exhibition and lectures a group of ‘Young Curators’ participated in a hands-on photography workshop at Kirkcaldy Galleries with Morwenna Kearsley, where they were introduced to manual SLR cameras and shooting on film. Braving the public the group made a series of Abus-esque style portraits around the town, ready to be processed in the following workshop at Stills.
The Young Curators visited Stills in April 2015 where Caroline Douglas helped them to transform the lower ground floor into an Arbus Studio - research material, test strips and contact sheets covered the walls as the group made a number of new images using medium format cameras and learned how to process the film previously shot in Kirkcaldy.
We were incredibly impressed with the work produced over the weekend and we look forward to having the group back in our darkrooms to continue printing. From the feedback received we are pretty sure the group enjoyed the experience…
“I was lucky enough to take part in a 2day course at Stills based on the work we have done in college on Dianne Arbus. I've had the best weekend ever. It was so exciting to literally watch our images come to life l was like a kid in a sweet shop! Definitely caught the photography buzz. Came away with a great sense of achievement I just want to go back tomorrow and develop all my images. Can not recommend Stills enough the other staff were so friendly. Morwenna (sorry if spelt wrong) was great at our introduction to the gallery with her workshop in Kirkcaldy. An amazing experience would do it all again hopefully we might get another class (literally going to beg Karin and Kyle our Artists Rooms workers to come back. Thank you so much Caroline your great at your job” Lee
