At the start of 2015 we offered primary school pupils in Edinburgh the chance to participate in photography taster sessions. Dipping their toes in the photography pool the young snappers looked at work by the great masters before venturing out to create their own visions with challenges to inspire.
For those who fancied themselves as the next Vivian Maier or Martin Parr, there was the opportunity to come into Stills during their midterm break where they discovered five techniques in five days. They made giant photograms and cyanotypes using plants foraged from the local gardens. Using a medium format Hasselblad they shot Hill and Adamson inspired portraits on Carlton Hill, which were later printed in the darkrooms. They made digital prints and kept artists sketchbooks and as a special treat we went to visit Camera Obscura to learn more about the history of optics and photographic seeing.
Greig Howitt joined us for the mid term break as our voluntary assistant. As a Stills Young Photographer graduate, practicing photographer and soon to be BA photography student, we were delighted to have him and his expertise on board.
