Tutor: Brittonie Fletcher
A two-day introduction to the Kallitype printing process, affectionately referred to as “the Poor-Man’s Platinum Print,” and sharing the chemical heritage of the Platino-Palladio type.
At a fraction of the cost, this photographic printing process can achieve similar and expanded results and affords experimentation.
The Kallitype is in the same family as Van Dyke Brown and Argyrotype while providing a more extensive range of unique and valuable processing and aesthetic differences. This beautiful Victorian developing-out process offers a broader range of tonal gradients and colour pallets.
Students will finish the weekend with the following:
- A more profound knowledge of this Victorian process and its physical, chemical, and historical relationship to other historic and alternative processes.
- A base of experience and information to begin kallitype printing in their practice, including:
- Introductory chemistry and paper requirements and options
- Facilities and equipment needed
- Coating techniques
- Exposure and processing information
- Experience with the developer and archival toning options
- Troubleshooting
- A range of self-made Kallitype prints to take home
- Digital negatives; these are made for the process and can be kept for future use.
Students can have up to 5 5×7” digital negatives made for the course from digital files submitted in advance, but are encouraged to bring any large format negatives (5×4” and upwards) to contact-print with if you have them. Please see confirmation email after booking for further details.
All materials are included in the course fee.
