Tutor: Thomas Whittle
This short online course will give your project a jump-start. Are you sitting on a pile of artwork without knowing where or how to begin? Are you stuck at the mid-point of a project? Do you need some outside input to help resolve a series? This short course will give you the tools to tackle these jumping blocks. Starting with some creative games designed to enable a new creative energy boost, this course will also include one to one tutorials and group discussion.
The course will include video calls, work at home tasks and group sharing of artwork. At the end of the four sessions you will have learnt new ways of sustaining projects, developing series and breaking through creative barriers. Focussing on ways in which different artists and photographers approach their work you will develop new tactics for creative projects. Often these methods include rules set out by the artist enabling them to focus, honing their specific interest and allowing them to develop work. By the end of this course you will have achieved new insight to your ways of working, met a group of peers and developed a project further.
A short homework task will be set before the first session.
Please note there will be a week break on Monday 01 November to facilitate the production and development of your project.
Session 1 (Group Call): This initial session will lay out the aims of the course, with the tutor and participants all providing a short introductory presentation to their work, sharing of a few images, and outlining their personal aims for the course. The session will include a presentation of ways of working, setting up the next week and setting a task for the next session.
Session 2 (Group Call): We will look at different artists and photographers and the rules they set themselves to enable them to make work. These will include John Baldessari’s teaching methods from California Art Institute, working methods of Post-war German photographers and contemporary photographers working today. There will be a short homework task for the next session.
Session 3 (1:1 tutorials): Each participant will be allocated 15mins to discuss their project focussing on their particular concerns. Individual tasks will be set for each participant which may include producing more work, editing and/or developing a new strand of the project. The next session will be two weeks after Session 3 to allow for this task to be completed.
Session 4 (Group Call): Participants will each present part of their project to the others and have the chance to discuss the project as a group. This will give participants the opportunity to show work to a new audience, talk about their interests and gain experience presenting their artwork. We will discuss ways of going forward, such as exhibitions and publications as well as ways of supporting practice sustainably.
Please note: all sessions will be conducted via Zoom. We would ask you to download this in advance and make sure you have a stable internet connection, but you do not need to have a Premium account.
