Darkrooms

Situated beneath the gallery on the lower ground floor are our comprehensive darkrooms including Scotland’s only open access dry-to-dry colour print processor. Despite advances in digital technologies, our traditional wet darkrooms remain as popular as ever. Whether you want to get to grips with the basics of this magical medium, experiment with new techniques or produce professional hand-made fibre based and c-type prints, Stills’ darkrooms can meet all of your needs.

Darkroom Facilities include:

Black & White Communal Darkroom with 6 x LPL 7700 (6×7) colour enlargers for black and white printing. Also includes RC print dryer, archival print washer for FB papers up to 12×16″ and capacity for mural printing.

Individual darkrooms with LPL 7452 large format (5×4″) colour enlargers and private sink and desk space. Rooms can be used for both analogue B&W and Colour printing up to 20×24″ in size as well as film processing capabilities.

Colour C-41 film processing available with a CineStill Temperature Controlled unit used in conjunction with user-friendly CS41 chemistry and Paterson Developer Tanks – allowing for developing of film formats up to 5×4″.

RA4 Colour Print Processor for analogue colour prints, using a Thermophot 505 dry-to-dry processor (20” width intake).

Finishing area with dry mount press, guillotines, Logan bevelled matt cutter, cutting mats and scalpels.

Consumables

A wide range of consumables including paper and ink are available to buy in the centre at reasonable prices.
