This intensive weekend course explores the unique aesthetic and tactile character of photochemical moving-image film. Employing a DIY, hands-on-approach, the course will celebrate the inherent qualities of film and ask, what are the compelling aesthetic reasons artists continue to make work engaging these artisanal approaches? Embracing close-looking, chance and spontaneity, we will work collaboratively to shoot film, which we will then process in the darkroom using eco-friendly chemistry and techniques. The workshop will conclude with a celebratory screening of the Super 8 films created by participants.

Day 1
Introduction to Super 8: Cameras, film as material, format history, steps preparing for a shoot, guided shooting techniques and approaches
Shooting a cartridge of B&W Super 8 film. Working in pairs, participants will collaborate on shooting a short film in the historic old town of Edinburgh. We will explore different styles and techniques, with support on-hand to offer guidance and help troubleshoot as necessary.

Day 2
Hand-processing in the communal darkroom: Embracing a DIY approach we will hand-process our films in eco-friendly chemistry. This tactile method is a great fun, and offers the chance to really engage with the magic materiality of film! Often creating unexpected results, we will embrace the unique aesthetic features this technique affords.
Introduction to projection equipment and preparing the film for projection: Screening of work created and considerations of how screening conditions might be considered creatively.
