To coincide with our current exhibition, After the End of History: British Working Class Photography 1989 – 2024, we are excited to announce a special Masterclass with documentary photographer, Kavi Pujara.

Pujara works on long-term photography projects that explore community, migration and home. His first monograph, This Golden Mile, was published by Setanta Books, and exhibited at The Martin Parr Foundation, Bristol, in 2022. A selection of photographs from Pujara’s This Golden Mile are currently on show at Stills as part of the Hayward Gallery Touring exhibition, After the End of History: British Working Class Photography 1989 – 2024.

“This Golden Mile explores the streets surrounding the famous one-mile stretch of Melton Road and Belgrave Road in Leicester. Documenting its arteries and veins to reveal the poetry of homes, temples and street corners. For its residents, the Golden Mile is both an entry point and an ending, the last mile of a long journey to Britain. Photographed over five years (2018 –22) as Britain left the EU, I wanted to celebrate this multicultural community during these politically polarising times. I hope to show our commonality and that communities like this are not an erosion of British values or its culture but a vital artery in our intertwined and tangled colonial histories.” – Kavi Pujara

Street photography is sometimes described as one of photography’s classic genres, and it has a significant role in the medium’s history. This practical 1-day workshop will focus on Pujara’s narrative driven use of street portraiture, providing insight into his working methods, and practical guidance on picking locations, camera setup, composition, use of available light, and approaching subjects.

Morning:
The morning session will begin with an introduction to Kavi’s work and practice, offering insight into the planning and decision-making involved in creating street portraits. Participants will accompany Kavi onto the street to observe how he approaches and photographs a subject, before returning to the Stills for a group discussion.
Afternoon:
In the afternoon, participants will head out to capture their own photographs. Kavi will be on hand to offer practical guidance and support as participants make their own portraits.
The day will conclude with a review session, where participants can receive feedback from Kavi and the group on the photographs they have taken during the workshop.
