To coincide with our current exhibition, The Queering of Photography, we are excited to announce a special Masterclass with the artist Åsa Johannesson.

In this workshop, you will be guided through the process of developing a portrait style, combining creative approaches with technical knowledge. Participants are asked to bring their own cameras, and there will be opportunities to work with an analogue large-format plate camera.

Through a mini-lecture on the history and theory of photographic portraiture, followed by practical exercises, participants will gain insight into the development of portraiture while building their understanding of the genre. Topics covered include identifying different photographic portrait styles, exploring compositional techniques, working with natural and ambient light, and learning about key camera settings such as focal length. This workshop is aimed at anyone with an interest in portrait photography who would like to expand their knowledge and understanding of the medium. There will be opportunities for participants to share examples of their own photographic work.

Åsa Johannesson

Åsa Johannesson works across photography and writing. Åsa has exhibited her photographic work internationally, including at Centrum för fotografi (Stockholm), Queer Britain (London), Landskrona Foto (Landskrona), and FutureLab (Shanghai). Her most recent book, the research monograph Queer Methodology for Photography presents new approaches to making, writing and thinking about queer photography. Åsa’s prose poetry collection And I wanted to see it: my queerness in the best light is forthcoming. Åsa is based in London, UK and her hometown Växjö, Sweden.
